Stronger than Yesterday: Trivandrum Toastmasters Meeting 634

Stronger than Yesterday was the theme of Trivandrum Toastmasters Club’s 634th meeting, held on 3 October 2026. I wasn’t able to attend this time, so this recap is written from the club’s meeting records rather than from my own seat in the room. Even so, it’s a meeting worth writing about, because everything in it pointed the same way: forward.

Stronger than Yesterday, Starting with a Round Robin

The meeting opened with a thought-provoking Round Robin session around the theme, inviting everyone to reflect on what “stronger than yesterday” actually looks like in practice. Round Robins work because nobody can hide in them: everyone speaks, briefly, and the room hears many voices on a single idea. It’s a deceptively simple phrase, too. It doesn’t ask for a dramatic transformation, just a small, honest step beyond where you stood the day before, which is exactly the spirit Toastmasters is built on.

Two Prepared Speeches

Two prepared speeches anchored the evening: “The Happiest Place on Earth” by TM Jayakrishnan and “Beyond the Introduction” by TM Vivek. I can’t speak to either from experience, but the titles alone suggest two very different stories. Prepared speeches are where the Pathways projects get put into practice, and each one is a chance to try something a little harder than the last. TM Vivek’s speech earned him the Best Speaker award, which was a particularly proud moment for me, since he is my mentee.

Table Topics and a New Member

TM Roshni led the Table Topics session, giving members the chance to think on their feet and respond spontaneously, the kind of practice that quietly builds confidence week after week. If you’re curious how the role works, Toastmasters International explains it here. A special highlight of the evening was the induction of TM Parvathi as a new member of the club. Welcoming a member is its own kind of theme moment: every new voice in the room is someone choosing to take that first step toward being stronger than yesterday. It’s always a joy to see the club grow by one more voice.

Recognitions

Recognition is one of the quieter engines of a club, a small, public way of saying that the effort didn’t go unnoticed. The evening’s awards went to:

  • Best Speaker — TM Vivek
  • Best Evaluator — DTM George
  • Best Role Player — TM Reena
  • Best Table Topics Speaker — TM Jayapalan and TM Alan (shared award)
  • Best TAG Team Player — TM Subramoni

Congratulations to all of them, and to everyone who took the floor.

Why This Theme Matters

Theme meetings give a club a shared lens. When every role-player, from the Round Robin to the evaluations, is thinking about the same idea, even ordinary moments pick up extra meaning. A speaker who tries a new structure, or a member who takes on a Table Topics question they’d normally pass on, is making a small move toward becoming stronger than yesterday. Each one is easier when the whole room is pulling in the same direction.

Missing a Meeting, Not the Momentum

Missing a meeting is never ideal, especially when it’s one I’d normally be in the thick of as Secretary. But there’s a lesson tucked into this week’s theme: being stronger than yesterday doesn’t depend on perfect attendance. It depends on what you do next, which means showing up again, trying again, and learning from feedback, one step at a time. The club’s next milestone is already on the calendar: a Moments of Truth session, Toastmasters International’s club self-evaluation exercise, which invites us to look honestly at what’s working and what could improve. Following Meeting 633’s “Challenge Yourself” session, where I served as Grammarian, this week’s theme was a reminder that these themes build on each other: challenge yourself one week, grow stronger the next.
