Moments of Truth: Trivandrum Toastmasters Meeting 635

Moments of Truth was the theme of Trivandrum Toastmasters Club’s 635th meeting, held on 10 October 2026 at Srothas Hall in Pattom. It ran from 5:45 PM to 8:00 PM under President DTM A. T. Pillai, with DTM George Jacob as Toastmaster of the Day.

Moments of Truth, Starting with the President

The evening began, as it always does, with networking. The Sergeant-at-Arms, TM Alan, was away, so TM Varghese stepped in to introduce the meeting. President DTM A. T. Pillai then welcomed members and guests and formally called the meeting to order.

The President went on to deliver a detailed PowerPoint presentation on Moments of Truth, Toastmasters International’s club quality evaluation framework and one of the 11 educational modules of the Successful Club Series. It invites a club to look honestly at what is working and what could be better. Opening with Moments of Truth set the tone: this was a meeting about taking stock, not just about speeches.

The Moments of Truth presentation was followed by a group discussion. Members sat in small groups and analysed how our club is working across six aspects, each of which the President had explained to us in detail:

  • First Impressions
  • Membership Orientation
  • Fellowship, Variety and Communication
  • Program Planning and Meeting Organization
  • Membership Strength
  • Achievement Recognition

The Toastmasters International handout asks each group to rate the club on every standard, from “we never meet this standard” to “we always meet it.” For anything rated 3 or lower, the group asks what is causing the challenge, what can be done about it, and who could take that action. It was a useful reminder that a club improves when its own members look at it honestly, one question at a time.

A Theme Introduction and a Round Robin That Had to Wait

DTM George Jacob, the Toastmaster of the Day, took over and introduced the theme. The Round Robin session was not conducted because of paucity of time. That happens in any full meeting: when the clock runs short, something has to give, and it is a reminder of how much a good agenda depends on everyone keeping to time.

Duality, a Speech by TM Robert

TM Subramoni, the General Evaluator, was introduced and presented the TAG team: TM Hima as Timer, TM Roshni as Ah-counter and TM Sreekanth as Grammarian. The Toastmaster of the Day then invited TM Jayakrishnan, the speech evaluator, to read out the speech objectives.

TM Robert delivered the prepared speech of the evening, titled “Duality.” The title alone invites you to think about the two sides we all carry: the confident and the doubtful, the role we play and the person underneath. Prepared speeches are where Toastmasters members turn their own lives into stories, and a topic like this one gives the room plenty to reflect on.

Tea, Table Topics and Evaluations

A tea break followed the prepared speech. After it, TM Varghese conducted Table Topics, giving members a chance to practise impromptu speaking. The evaluation session came next, along with reports from the meeting functionaries. The General Evaluator gave his report after the individual TAG team reports.

The Toastmaster of the Day then concluded the Moments of Truth theme, and the President made his closing remarks. Guests shared their feedback while ExCom members counted the votes for the awards.

Recognitions

The President announced the winners of the evening:

  • Best Evaluator — TM Jayakrishnan
  • Best Role Player — DTM George Jacob
  • Best Table Topics Speaker — Binu

Congratulations to all three, and to everyone who took on a role.

Your Own Moments of Truth

The idea behind Moments of Truth is not limited to clubs. For many of us, especially women who spent years putting everyone else first, these are the questions we keep for “later”: What is working for me right now? What am I avoiding? What is one small thing I will change this week? I know that feeling well. After my own break from work, there were many mornings when it felt easier to wait than to ask. Moments of Truth are easy to postpone, and an honest answer is rarely comfortable, but it is where progress begins, at any age.

In a club, these moments are everywhere. Walking in for the first time is one. Turning up week after week is another. So is accepting an ExCom post. For me, saying yes to the role of Secretary was a moment of truth. The job is more than writing minutes like these. It also means reaching out to members to help fill the weekly roles, and giving a gentle nudge to those who say “maybe next time.” I do this in my 50s, an age when many of us feel the time for new challenges has passed. It has taught me that a nudge works both ways: each time I encourage someone to take a role, I am reminded to step up myself.

If you are a woman who has been waiting for the “right time” to join a club, take a role or simply speak up, please take this as your nudge. Hardly anyone feels ready. Most of us grow by saying yes first and finding our feet afterwards. The comfort zone is comfortable, but it is not where we grow. Come and sit in the room, and take the smallest role on the agenda. Your own moment of truth may be closer than you think.

This fits neatly with last week’s theme, when Meeting 634 asked us to be stronger than yesterday. Being stronger starts with seeing clearly where you stand, and that is what these Moments of Truth are for.
